A Christmas First for Strathpeffer

Award winning poet, broadcaster and actor Angus Peter Campbell from Skye is to grace the boards of Strathpeffer Pavilion on Thursday 2nd December in another ground breaking bi-lingual production in tandem with Mod Gold Medalist, Gaelic singer Fiona J Mackenzie from Dingwall.

The production “Heire Bannag- A Celtic Christmas Surprise” , will for the first time, present a bi-lingual mix of Gaelic Christmas carols and songs, literary musings on the Christmas Story, contemporary dance and other surprises to be released on the night.

Fiona Mackenzie said: “I’m delighted that Angus Peter has agreed to work on this exciting project with me and it’s an absolute first for the Highlands. Never before has a mix of this music and literature been produced in the area.

“The whole idea for this project is a natural follow on from the release of the first Gaelic Christmas CD “ Duan Nollaig” in 2007 where myself and producer Irvin Duguid produced arrangements of both ancient and contemporary Christmas carols and songs. The CD has proved to be very popular right across the world and not just at Christmas. 

“We wanted to ensure that the wonderful richness of culture which we possess here is heard as widely as possible and also appeals to those who have an interest in Gaelic literature. Being bi-lingual, the production is suitable for Gaelic speakers and non speakers alike.  Angus Peter is of course, one of Scotland’s premier poets and it is a great coup for us that he is joining us for this unique Christmas event.

“We are also thrilled to be utilising the beautiful talents of Inverness dancer and singer Gemma Giubarelli in a followup to the successful concert staged at Brodie Castle last year for Year of Homecoming. Now working in theatre in London, Gemma will be illustrating some of the songs in a mix of contemporary dance and ballet, a mix which proved to be very successful and artistically beautiful last year.

“We will also be endeavouring to make the audience smile with a few seasonal surprises!”.

The cabaret style concert will take place in the Pavilion at 8pm and will also feature Fiona Sellar, head teacher of music at Nairn Academy, on piano and Dingwall Gaelic singer and clarsach player Katie Mackenzie.
