Gaelic hub planned for Inverness site Aberdeen Press & Journal 14/01/2011 Plans to build a multi-purpose Gaelic hub alongside the Inverness Gaelic School have taken a step forward after a detailed planning application was lodged with the Highland Council. The new facilities, proposed by the Inverness Gaelic Forum, will provide a space for a Gaelic wrap-around nursery, office space into which the main Gaelic organisations will be relocated, and a social space where speakers can meet and where Gaelic events and exhibitions can be held. Inverness south councillor Roy Pedersen, chairman of the steering group, said: "The Inverness Gaelic School has been a huge success and will be full in two years. It has already had to be extended to accommodate its rapid growth. "Taking the nursery out of the school and relocating it in the hub will allow the school to absorb more primary classes. "The new Gaelic medium nursery will cater for all pre-school ages from babies upwards. "Bringing the Gaelic bodies together under one roof will bring financial savings through sharing facilities in a more energy efficient space. "Combining all these drivers will create a vigorous new approach to promote the linguistic, cultural, and economic development of the city." Inverness Gaelic Forum chairman Colla MacDonald welcomed the project, adding it had the support of the main Gaelic bodies in the city including Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidhlig, An Comunn Gàidhealach, Clì Gàidhlig, Fèisean nan Gàidheal, Curam Chloinne, Comunn na Gàidhlig Inbhir Nis. The project was designed by Synergie in partnership with Colin Armstrong Architects, with initial funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig and with active support from Highland Council. Press Statement Thursday 13TH JANUARY Inverness Gaelic Hub Planning Application The long-sought plan to build a multi-purpose Gaelic building, or hub, on land adjacent to Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis (the Inverness Gaelic School) has moved a step closer. A detailed planning application has been lodged with the Highland Council. See plans and perspective views attached. This ambitious project will create a “Gaelic environment” within a tailor-made building that will provide space for a Gaelic wrap-around nursery, office space into which the main Gaelic organisations will be relocated and a social space where Gaelic speakers can meet and where Gaelic events and exhibitions can be held. Councillor Roy Pedersen who chairs the steering group explained: “The imperatives driving this project are as follows:
Colla MacDonald, Chair of Fòram Gàidhlig Inbhir Nis welcomed the project saying: “The project has been taken forward by a steering group under the auspices of Fòram Gàidhlig Inbhir Nis (The Inverness Gaelic Forum) an open membership, community based organisation. The project has the support of the main Gaelic bodies in the City and specifically: Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidhlig, An Comunn Gàidhealach, Clì Gàidhlig, Fèisean nan Gàidheal, Curam Chloinne, Comunn na Gàidhlig Inbhir Nis” Project facilitation and design was provided by Synergie in partnership with Colin Armstrong Architects with initial funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig and with active support from Highland Council. For more information contact: Cllr Roy Pedersen on 01463 241107, Mob 07753 882199 A Christmas First for Strathpeffer 23rd November 2010 Award winning poet, broadcaster and actor Angus Peter Campbell from Skye is to grace the boards of Strathpeffer Pavilion on Thursday 2nd December in another ground breaking bi-lingual production in tandem with Mod Gold Medalist, Gaelic singer Fiona J Mackenzie from Dingwall. The production “Heire Bannag- A Celtic Christmas Surprise” , will for the first time, present a bi-lingual mix of Gaelic Christmas carols and songs, literary musings on the Christmas Story, contemporary dance and other surprises to be released on the night. Fiona Mackenzie said: “I’m delighted that Angus Peter has agreed to work on this exciting project with me and it’s an absolute first for the Highlands. Never before has a mix of this music and literature been produced in the area. “The whole idea for this project is a natural follow on from the release of the first Gaelic Christmas CD “ Duan Nollaig” in 2007 where myself and producer Irvin Duguid produced arrangements of both ancient and contemporary Christmas carols and songs. The CD has proved to be very popular right across the world and not just at Christmas. “We wanted to ensure that the wonderful richness of culture which we possess here is heard as widely as possible and also appeals to those who have an interest in Gaelic literature. Being bi-lingual, the production is suitable for Gaelic speakers and non speakers alike. Angus Peter is of course, one of Scotland’s premier poets and it is a great coup for us that he is joining us for this unique Christmas event. “We are also thrilled to be utilising the beautiful talents of Inverness dancer and singer Gemma Giubarelli in a followup to the successful concert staged at Brodie Castle last year for Year of Homecoming. Now working in theatre in London, Gemma will be illustrating some of the songs in a mix of contemporary dance and ballet, a mix which proved to be very successful and artistically beautiful last year. “We will also be endeavouring to make the audience smile with a few seasonal surprises!”. The cabaret style concert will take place in the Pavilion at 8pm and will also feature Fiona Sellar, head teacher of music at Nairn Academy, on piano and Dingwall Gaelic singer and clarsach player Katie Mackenzie. -ENDS- Notes to Editor:

The Gaelic heritage of Ross-shire is clear to see throughout the area , just by looking at the road signs- Kiltearn, Alness, Balblair, Dundonnell, Badachro, Gairloch, to name but a few. But do you actually know what they mean , where the origins of the names lie? The newly established Gaelic centre in Evanton, An t-Oisean, will soon be giving everyone the opportunity to find out a little more about the places they live in , to understand why places have these unusual and intriguing names. Centre co-ordinator, Fiona Mackenzie said “The aim of An t-Oisean (Corner) Gaelic group is to provide a welcoming, relaxing, bi-lingual and informal place to learn more about your local Gaelic heritage, to learn a little Gaelic if you so wish, to listen to spoken Gaelic and see how it fits into your local community. In addition to our weekly Gaelic coffee mornings, on Tuesdays,we have held several successful social evenings, the most recent being an entertaining and thought provoking evening of bi-lingual poetry readings and musings by well known Gaelic poet, actor and broadcaster Angus Peter Campbell. This event launched our new Winter Programme of evenings which include talks about such diverse subjects as Scottish and Scandinavian Cross- Country ski-ing, Gaelic broadcasting and tales of the Jacobites and Culloden ( bey well known folklorist Margaret Bennett). Our November evening however, promises to prove interesting even to a a non Gaelic audience. Local Dingwall Academy Gaelic teacher and historian Iain MacIlle Chiar will present a fascinating talk on the placenames of Ross-shire and other places, showing us how and why our local towns, villages and districts are called as they are. Gaelic used to be at the heart of Ross-shire communities and we hope that learning more abut the local placenames will engender a renewed sense of identity and belonging to many folk. We hope that people of all ages, from primary schoolchildren to those who may remember a time when Gaelic was spoken routinely on the streets of Ross-shire , will come and hear what Iain has to tell us”.
